July Update: Summer Asparagus Sale
Summer harvest season is upon us, but you can still plant our 2-year-old bare root Purple Passion Asparagus for a harvest next year as three-year old crowns. For summer planting, give them frequent waterings and a little shade wouldn't hurt. If you're looking to plant before next year, you'd do that before the fall, ideally.

Shipped Trimmed and Ready to Plant. We sell starter plants, carefully trimmed and prepared for planting upon arrival. They are shipped as bare root or plugs, not in containers.
‘Purple Passion’ is considered a connoisseur’s selection of asparagus with a refined sweet flavor (20% more sugar!) which becomes mildly nutty when cooked.
The spears are tall and have pointed heads. They are a bit more narrow than ‘Jersey Giant’, but wider than others in the Jersey series. These purple spears are not stringy like typical asparagus and the whole spear can be cooked without wasting the end.
Add raw pieces of ‘Purple Passion’ to salads and veggie trays for a touch of color. The spears will turn green when cooked.

Asparagus Planting and Care
-
Sun Lover
Purple Passion is a full sun lover. Plant in a spot with unobstructed direct sunlight for 6-8 hours per day. Avoid planting near tall structures or trees which cast shade and low-lying areas prone to waterlogging.
-
Soil Prep
Work in 2–3 inches of compost or aged manure to enrich the soil. Add a balanced fertilizer (e.g., 10-10-10) or bone meal for phosphorus to support root growth. Dig a trench 6–12 inches deep and 12–18 inches wide, with a slight center mound center for crowns.
-
When to Plant
Plant bare root crowns in early spring (March–April) after the last frost, when soil temperatures reach 50°F (10°C). Late winter is fine in In warmer zones (7–8). Just not frozen. Better yet, plant the year before and harvest the following year.
-
How to Plant
Space crowns 12–18 inches apart in rows 3–5 feet apart. Place crowns on the mound with roots spread out, covering them with 2–3 inches of soil. Gradually fill the trench as spears grow, keeping tips exposed. Water thoroughly after planting.
-
Long-Term Care
Keep soil evenly moist (1 inch of water per week) during the first year. Mulch with straw or wood chips (2–3 inches) to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Avoid harvesting first year plants. Ours are 2-year old. Apply a nitrogen-rich fertilizer (e.g., 5-10-10) in early spring of subsequent years.
-
Harvest
Spears will be 6–8 inches (18–23 cm) tall and 0.5–0.75 inches (1.3–1.9 cm) in diameter when ready to harvest. They'll be deep burgandy to purple especially near the tips. Their exture will be smooth and tender when young. The interior is creamy green, and the lower part of the spear may have a lighter purple or greenish hue.
