Common Name: Daffodil

Narcissus 'Hillstar' is a jonquilla daffodil, reaching 14 to 16 inches in height. It produces clusters of 2–3 nodding blooms per stem, with golden-yellow petals surrounding a creamy-white cup, creating a soft contrast. The flowers appear in mid-to-late spring and are sweetly fragrant, making them excellent for cut arrangements and attracting pollinators. Thriving in full sun to part shade, 'Hillstar' prefers well-drained soil and is deer-resistant, rabbit-resistant, and drought-tolerant. It naturalizes well, forming expanding clusters over time. This variety has won the RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Miniature daffodils are compact, early-flowering varieties that bring delicate charm to gardens, containers, and rockeries. Despite their smaller size, these daffodils offer vibrant color and strong perennial performance, blooming in shades of yellow, white, and orange.

Thriving in full sun and well-drained soil, miniature daffodils are deer-resistant, drought-tolerant, and naturalize easily, making them ideal for tight spaces, borders, and woodland plantings. Their proportionately small flowers and slender stems create a refined, elegant display while providing essential nectar for early pollinators.

Growing Tips

Planting: Plant bulbs in fall, 6 inches deep and 4 to 6 inches apart, with the pointed end up. Choose a sheltered spot—double blooms are heavier and benefit from wind protection.
Location: Full sun to partial shade. At least 6 hours of sunlight daily ensures strong stems and vibrant blooms.
Soil: Well-drained, fertile loam with a pH of 6.0–7.0. Enrich with compost or peat moss to improve drainage and structure.
Watering: Water after planting and during active spring growth. Reduce watering once foliage yellows—bulbs prefer dry summer dormancy.
Temperature: Hardy in USDA zones 3–9. Requires a winter chill to bloom reliably.
Fertilization: Apply compost or a balanced, low-nitrogen fertilizer in fall and again in early spring.
Pruning: Deadhead spent blooms to prevent seed formation. Allow foliage to die back naturally to recharge the bulb.
Propagation: Naturalizes by offsets. Divide clumps every 4 to 5 years in summer when dormant.
