Common Name: Daffodil
Experience the timeless elegance of 'Poeticus Recurvus', the legendary Pheasant's Eye Daffodil that has captivated gardeners for centuries. Standing 12-14 inches tall, these stunning blooms feature pure white petals that gracefully curve backward, revealing a jewel-like golden cup with a striking red edge.
The intoxicating fragrance that fills your garden in late spring makes these bulbs perfect for both naturalized landscapes and sophisticated cut flower arrangements. What sets this heirloom apart is its exceptional adaptability—it thrives where other daffodils struggle, flourishing in moisture-rich rain gardens and damp meadows while remaining drought-tolerant once established.
Naturally resistant to deer and rabbits, requiring minimal fuss in sun or partial shade, and honored with the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, 'Poeticus Recurvus' delivers unmatched beauty with remarkable reliability. Transform your garden with a variety that combines proven performance, unforgettable fragrance, and generations of gardening heritage.
Small-cupped daffodils bloom during mid-season with singular, perfectly proportioned flowers showcasing delicate cups that comprise no more than one-third of the petal length. The striking bi-colored contrasts—such as white petals with golden or red-rimmed centers—create visual interest that commands attention without overwhelming the landscape.
Growing Tips
Planting: Plant bulbs in fall, 6 inches deep and 4 to 6 inches apart, with the pointed end up. These daffodils are ideal for mass plantings or refined borders.
Location: Full sun to partial shade. They bloom best with at least 6 hours of sunlight daily.
Soil: Well-drained, moderately fertile soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0). Enrich with compost or leaf mold.
Watering: Water after planting and during active spring growth. Once foliage yellows, reduce watering—bulbs prefer dry summer dormancy.
Temperature: Hardy in USDA zones 3–8. Requires a winter chill to bloom reliably.
Fertilization: Apply compost or a low-nitrogen fertilizer in fall and again in early spring.
Pruning: Deadhead spent blooms to prevent seed formation. Allow foliage to die back naturally to recharge the bulb.
Propagation: Naturalizes by offsets. Divide clumps every 4 to 5 years in summer when dormant.
Pest & Disease: Deer- and rodent-resistant. Good drainage prevents bulb rot.
