Collection: Berginia

Bergenia (common, Pigsqueak, Elephant’s Ears, Heartleaf Bergenia) is a small genus (about 10 species) of tough, evergreen perennials in the Saxifragaceae family. They’re native to central Asia (Himalayas, Siberia, China, etc.) and are absolute workhorses in cold-climate and shade gardens.

Virtually indestructible: survive neglect, deep shade, poor soil, drought, salt, wind, and brutal winters. Big, leathery, glossy leaves (up to dinner-plate size on some cultivars) that often turn bronze, red, or purple in winter → great winter interest.

Early spring flowers (March–May, sometimes earlier in mild winters) on stout red stems — clusters of pink, rose, white, or magenta bells. Leaves make a distinctive squeaky sound when rubbed together → “pigsqueak.”
