Lychnis / Maltese Cross

Lychnis (Maltese Cross) is a striking upright perennial prized for its brilliant scarlet-red blooms with distinctly notched petals that form a Maltese cross pattern. Also known as Jerusalem cross, this cold-hardy plant thrives in USDA zones 3–8 and reaches 2–4 feet tall, making it ideal for the middle or back of borders.

Flowering from early to midsummer, the bright clusters attract butterflies and hummingbirds, bringing pollinator activity to cottage gardens and perennial beds. Deadheading encourages extended bloom. The plant prefers full sun and tolerates light shade, performing best in consistently moist, well-draining soil. While deer-resistant and moderately drought-tolerant once established, it dislikes soggy conditions and excessive shade, which can cause stem weakness.

A classic cottage-garden essential with vivid color and reliable hardiness across cold regions.
