Foxglove, scientifically Digitalis, is a genus of about 20 species of herbaceous biennials, perennials, and shrubs. The most common Digitalis is known for its striking, tubular flowers that grow in tall spikes, typically purple, pink, or white, with speckled throats.
They’re biennial, meaning they typically complete their life cycle over two years—growing leaves in the first year and flowering in the second. They prefer partial shade and well-drained soil, making them a favorite for ornamental gardens. Pollinators like bees love them, especially bumblebees, which crawl right into those tubular flowers.
Beware: While Foxgloves are famous for their beauty, they also have toxic properties and can cause symptoms like nausea, dizziness, or even severe heart issues, so it’s not something to mess with casually.
