Common Name: False Indigo

Baptisia australis produces delicate indigo-blue flowers arranged in graceful spires that emerge above its distinctive blue-gray foliage during spring. The ornamental seed pods persist through fall, extending visual appeal into the cooler months.

This native perennial thrives in average to dry, well-drained soil with minimal water once established, making it an excellent choice for low-maintenance landscapes. Naturally occurring from Pennsylvania to North Carolina in woodlands and riparian zones, it demonstrates exceptional hardiness and longevity in garden settings.

This striking perennial displays indigo-blue flowers on elegant spikes reaching up to 12 inches, rising above compact mounds of soft blue-green foliage. Blooming from mid to late spring, the flowers give way to distinctive black seed pods measuring 2-3 inches long that persist through winter, offering extended seasonal interest.

These ornamental pods dry exceptionally well, making them valuable for cut flower and dried arrangement applications. Baptisia australis combines reliable performance with multi-season appeal, thriving in well-drained soil with minimal maintenance once established.
