Victoria Crown Rhubarb
Victoria Crown Rhubarb is a variety of rhubarb, and a pretty famous one at that! Officially known as Rheum rhabarbarum ‘Victoria’, it’s an heirloom type that’s been around since the 1830s, named after Queen Victoria.
It’s loved for its thick, juicy stalks that start rosy-red at the base and fade to green higher up, with a tart-yet-sweet flavor that’s less stringy than some other kinds. Gardeners prize it because it’s easy to grow, super productive, and great for forcing (covering it to get tender, early stalks).
So, when you hear "Victoria Crown," it’s just referring to the plant’s crown—the root part you plant—not a commercial brand.
All About Victoria Crown Rhubarb
-
Sun Lover
Victoria Crown Rhubarb loves full, direct sun 6-8 hours a day. This helps the stalks get thick and juicy. It can do some shade in really hot temps, but shade stunts the growth of the stalks.
-
Well-Drained Soil
Victoria Crown Rhubarb is a hardy plant, but it hates soggy soil. It's best in well-draining and slightly acidic to neutral—say, a pH between 5.5 and 6.5, give or take a little.
-
Plant in Early Spring
Getting Rhubarb in the ground before it starts growing is the key. This means early spring for most climates -- March and April. In warmer zones like 7 or 8, possibly late Winter.
-
Loamy Soil is Best
Victoria Crown Rhubarb loves organic matter, so a loamy soil mixed with compost, aged manure or peat moss is perfect. Again, make sure it's well drained.
-
Clay and Sandy Soils
Heavy clay and sandy soils are doable. With clay, add some sand or organic matter to improve drainage. For sandy soil, add compost to improve moisture and nutrient retention.
-
How to Plant
Dig a hole about 12-18 inches deep and wide; the buds should about 1-2 inches below the surface. Give it a good water. If you run into frost, a little mulch will protect the shoots.
-
Deer & Rabbit
Rhubarb is pretty resistant to deer and rabbits because the leaves are toxic. Even if they nibble on a stalk, the tart flavor is likely to deter them from making a full meal out of it. Still, it wouldn't hurt to put up a low fence or some netting to help starter plants in the first year.
-
Plant 3-4 Feet Apart
Ensure the spot isn’t crowded—rhubarb needs space. Plant crowns 3-4 feet apart for airflow, preventing issues like crown rot or powdery mildew. Top-dress with compost or balanced fertilizer each spring after year one. Avoid overwatering.
How it all works at Hosta King
Shipping & Handling
Hosta King Promise
Your happiness with us is our #1 goal at Hosta King. If you are not happy with your plants, Hosta King will make it right. We can either ship you replacement plants or refund your money. You can have the same plants or have different plants, of equal or lesser value, shipped to you. If you feel a full money refund is necessary, we are happy to honor that request too. Let us know why you are not happy and we will make it right.
Shipped Trimmed and Ready to Plant
We sell starter perennials shipped bare root, as small plugs or bulbs. We do not ship in containers and we will often trim back growth on our perennial plugs to reduce stress on the plants during travel. Trimming does not hurt the plants. They'll bounce back with new growth. You'll receive your plants carefully wrapped and prepared for shipping in a box.
Plant Sizes
Starter perennials are smaller because they are young. Bare roots and bulbs speak for themselves. We have plug sizes ranging from 1-2 inches x 2-4 inches. These are not yet plants at maturity as seen in many of the photos on our store. We have photos of real starter plants on some listings and we are working to post more starter photos this year in 2026. We're adding plug sizes to the plant pages, too. Bear with us as we update all our plant detail pages so you are better informed. In the meantime, if you need more details or a photo of an actual starter, send us a message in our chat.
Delivery
Your order should arrive within 7-14 days. Occasionally, we may hold an order so that we can fulfill it with new inventory we are expecting to receive. Just send us a chat if you need a status update.
Returns & Exchanges
Unfortunately, we do not do returns, refunds or offer warranties. It's hard to guarantee plant life indefinitely as there are so many variables outside our control once the plants leave our shop. However, we understand there will be times when our plants just don't do very well on the trip from our shop to your location. If there are any issues with plants when you receive them, send us a chat message from our website. We can issue store credits covering the cost of replacements.
Just keep in the mind these are starter plants, so they're small. We do not sell and ship mature plants in containers. See the details under our Starter Perennials Shipped Trimmed section, if you haven't already. Questions? Hit us up in the chat.
