Plants depicted in photos are at maturity. We sell starter perennials shipped bare root, as plugs (small plants 1-2 inches x 2-4 inches) or bulbs. Plugs are shipped trimmed to reduce stress during travel. We do not ship plants in containers.
Common Name: Persian Buttercup
Ranunculus is a fall-planted Persian buttercup, producing large, peony-shaped blooms in bright hues. These flowers appear in early spring in Zones 8–11, while in Zones 4–7, they should be planted in early spring for summer blooms.
Thriving in full sun and well-drained soil, Aviv Ranunculus grows on 12–16 inch stems, making it ideal for cut flower production. The blooms measure 4–5 inches across, offering long-lasting beauty in gardens and floral arrangements.
Grower Tips
Planting: In USDA zones 8–10, plant tubers in fall for early spring blooms. In colder zones (3–7), fall planting is only recommended with frost protection—otherwise, store tubers in a cool, dry place and plant in late winter or early spring. Soak tubers in room-temperature water for 1 to 3 hours before planting. Plant claw-side down, 2 to 3 inches deep.
Spacing: Space 4 to 6 inches apart. For dense displays, aim for 50–75 tubers per square meter.
Light: Full sun is essential—at least 6 hours daily. Choose a sheltered spot with good air circulation.
Soil: Fertile, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0–7.0. Amend with compost or leaf mold to improve structure.
Watering: Water after planting and keep soil lightly moist during active growth. Avoid soggy conditions—ranunculus tubers are prone to rot.
Temperature & Protection: Hardy to about 25°F (–4°C). In zones 8–10, mulch after planting to buffer against cold snaps. In zones 7 and below, use frost cloths or grow in containers that can be moved indoors.
Fertilization: Feed every 2–3 weeks with a high-potash fertilizer once growth begins. Liquid seaweed is a great organic option.
Pruning: Deadhead regularly to encourage more blooms. After flowering, allow foliage to die back naturally.
Pest & Disease: Watch for aphids, slugs, and powdery mildew. Good airflow and hand-picking pests help prevent issues.

No Returns But Replacements
We do not do returns or offer warranties, unfortunately. We simply can't guarantee the future of plants after they leave our shop and are in your care. But the health of our plants upon arrival is something we'll stand by.
Shipping can stress plants. If there are any issues with your plants when you receive them, send us a chat message from our website. We can issue store credits or send replacements.
Also, our starter perennials are small plants. We do not issue refunds because they are smaller than expected. For more details about plant sizes, see Starter Perennials Shipped Trimmed.
Starter Perennials Ship Trimmed
Starters are small, young plants or plugs, bare roots and bulbs. We do not ship mature plants in containers. We will often trim back growth on our perennial plugs to reduce stress on the plants during travel. Trimming does not hurt the plants. They'll bounce back with new growth. You'll receive your plants carefully wrapped and prepared for shipping in a box.
Plant Sizes
Starter perennials are smaller because they are young. Bare roots and bulbs speak for themselves. We have plug sizes ranging from 1-2 inches x 2-4 inches, although some hostas come in larger sizes.
These are not yet plants at maturity as seen in many of the photos on our store. We have photos of real starter plants on some listings and we are working to post more starter photos this year in 2026. We're adding plug sizes to the plant pages, too. Bear with us as we update all our plant detail pages so you are better informed. In the meantime, if you need more details or a photo of an actual starter, send us a message in our chat.
Delivery
Your order should arrive within 7-14 days. Occasionally, we may hold an order so that we can fulfill it with new inventory we are expecting to receive. Just send us a chat if you need a status update.
