Jersey Giant is a standout, known for yielding 2-4 times more spears than older varieties. A superior all-male hybrid that is resistant to rust, fusarium, and crown and root rot. It is the most winter hardy of all the Jersey Hybrids and it is widely adapted to temperate and cool climates. It produces medium to large (7-9"), green spears with purple bracts.

Jersey Giant Asparagus

Jersey Giant is bred to optimize spear production by focusing on male plants, which don’t expend energy on seed production like female plants do. This results in more vigorous growth and larger, tender spears.

  • Height: 6-8"
  • Spread: 3-4 feet
  • Sunlight: Full Sun
  • Foliage: Green, Yellow, and Brown

  • Water: Average
  • Soil Quality: Fertile
  • Soil Chemistry: ph 6.5 and pH 7.0
  • Growth Rate: Moderate
  • Harvest: Summer
  • Sun Lover

Jersey Giant is a full sun lover. Plant in a spot with unobstructed direct sunlight for 6-8 hours per day. Avoid planting near tall structures or trees which cast shade and low-lying areas prone to waterlogging.

  • Soil Prep

Work in 2–3 inches of compost or aged manure to enrich the soil. Add a balanced fertilizer (e.g., 10-10-10) or bone meal for phosphorus to support root growth. Dig a trench 6–12 inches deep and 12–18 inches wide, with a slight center mound center for crowns.

  • When to Plant

Plant bare root crowns in early spring (March–April) after the last frost, when soil temperatures reach 50°F (10°C). Late winter is fine in In warmer zones (7–8). Just not frozen. Better yet, plant the year before and harvest the following year.

  • How to Plant

Space crowns 12–18 inches apart in rows 3–5 feet apart. Place crowns on the mound with roots spread out, covering them with 2–3 inches of soil. Gradually fill the trench as spears grow, keeping tips exposed. Water thoroughly after planting.

  • Long-Term Care

Keep soil evenly moist (1 inch of water per week) during the first year. Mulch with straw or wood chips (2–3 inches) to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Avoid harvesting first year plants. Ours are 2-year old. Apply a nitrogen-rich fertilizer (e.g., 5-10-10) in early spring of subsequent years.

  • Harvest

Spears will be 7–9 inches (18–23 cm) tall and 0.5–0.75 inches (1.3–1.9 cm) in diameter when ready to harvest. They'll be vibrant green with pointed tips that may have a purplish tinge near the tip, especially in cooler weather. Their exture will be smooth and tender when young.

Shipping & Handling

Starter Perennials Shipped Trimmed

Starters are small, young plants or plugs, bare roots and bulbs. We do not ship mature plants in containers. We will often trim back growth on our perennial plugs to reduce stress on the plants during travel. Trimming does not hurt the plants. They'll bounce back with new growth. You'll receive your plants carefully wrapped and prepared for shipping in a box.

Plant Sizes

Starter perennials are smaller because they are young. Bare roots and bulbs speak for themselves. We have plug sizes ranging from 1-2 inches x 2-4 inches, although some hostas come in larger sizes.

These are not yet plants at maturity as seen in many of the photos on our store. We have photos of real starter plants on some listings and we are working to post more starter photos this year in 2026. We're adding plug sizes to the plant pages, too. Bear with us as we update all our plant detail pages so you are better informed. In the meantime, if you need more details or a photo of an actual starter, send us a message in our chat.

Delivery

Your order should arrive within 7-14 days. Occasionally, we may hold an order so that we can fulfill it with new inventory we are expecting to receive. Just send us a chat if you need a status update.

Store Credit for Replacements

We do not do returns or offer warranties, unfortunately. We simply can't guarantee the future of plants after they leave our shop and are in your care. But the health of our plants upon arrival is something we'll stand by.

Shipping can stress plants. If there are any issues with your plants when you receive them, send us a chat message from our website. We can issue store credits or send replacements.

Also, our starter perennials are small plants. We do not issue refunds because they are smaller than expected. For more details about plant sizes, see Starter Perennials Shipped Trimmed.
